Michigan and Again

Conductor Sarah Stickland leads the NLB in a performance of Michigan and Again for audience and corps members at the 2024 NLDBC Send-Off Concert on Saturday, August 3rd 2024.
At the founding of Northern Lights, one of the major decisions in the process was the selection of a corps song. Many corps did not begin with corps songs like we have, and pulled them from major competitive successful moments in the history of their corps as having a "corps song" grew into part of the DCI culture. We are still a fledgling drum corps, but we wanted to have something that would be sentimental and meaningful for our members. After much consideration we decided on a song by the indie-folk band “The Accidentals” from Traverse City, Michigan. When the band wrote the song “Michigan and Again”-- a swaying piece in 12/8 that evokes the imagery of sand dunes, porcelain, our lakes and our pine trees-- Sav Buist stated about its writing that “It just got to the point where there's so much to say, it's easier to describe what it's like to come home”. Being an all-age drum corps, our mission is to help our young members springboard their drum corps and marching arts careers, but also give a place for old DCI age-outs and college marching band alumni to come back to and call home.
